Per Ryan Barrett with KDot:

We wanted to share an important update regarding the K-5 bridge repair and re-deck project over the Union Pacific railroad tracks and its continued impact on transportation throughout the Fairfax Industrial District.
Following recent discussions with KDOT’s contractor, Clarkson Construction, additional structural issues were identified after the removal of the existing bridge deck. Crews discovered further delamination within several bridge columns, along with a significant crack in one of the primary girders (beams).
As a result, KDOT paused construction to conduct more comprehensive inspections of the remaining structure. These findings required revised engineering plans to address additional column repairs and to replace the affected girder section. This process has required coordination among contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and fabricators, ultimately extending the project timeline.
As many of you are experiencing firsthand, the ongoing closure and construction activity continue to impact truck routes, employee commutes, and overall traffic flow in and around the Fairfax District.
KDOT has indicated that the current schedule is to have the K-5 bridge over the UP railroad tracks open to unrestricted traffic by October 2026.
We understand the significant inconvenience this creates for your operations and appreciate your continued patience as these necessary repairs are completed to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the structure.
We will continue to share updates as they become available.
