Some recent updates on current construction projects in the Fairfax district:
K5 Bridge:
- KDOT maintenance just patched an area in the passing lane (left lane) on the outbound side of the K-5 bridge with concrete.
- There is a chance KDOT may have to close the outbound side of the bridge which would mean all of K5 would be closed going in and out of Fairfax prior to beginning the bridge re-deck/repair project. KDOT maintenance is monitoring the bridge condition daily looking for anything that may trigger KDOT to close the outbound side of the K-5 bridge. KDOT will do their best to provide as much notice as possible if it is looking like the outbound side of the K-5 bridge will need to be closed.
- KDOT is on track for a Fall 2024 bid letting for the K-5 re-deck/repair over the UP Railroad.
- Current target date for K-5 bridge over the UP Railroad being open to unrestricted traffic is end of calendar year 2025 (i.e., December 31, 2025)
Sunshine Road:
- The gas main work from Brinkerhoff to Fairfax Trafficway has been completed, with the exception of retiring our existing main. We have two holes that are left open to complete this, which will happen when we complete the retirement of our existing main on the McCormick to 7th St project.
- On the McCormick to 7th St project, we are planning on completing the replacement of the service line to Kellenova (801 Sunshine) tomorrow (3/29/24). We then have roughly 5 service lines to tie into our newly installed main. This should be complete next week. Once this has been completed, we will complete the retirement of the existing main. I have this scheduled (with a third-party contractor – TDW) for the week of 4/8/24.
- Pavement replacement is in progress and/or has been completed on the Brinkerhoff to Fairfax Trafficway, with the exception of the areas still open. This will be completed as soon as we have wrapped up the retirement of the existing main. As Tommy mentioned below, the road replacement work for the remainder of the disturbed areas will begin the week of 4/10/24.
- After our existing main(s) have been retired, everything will be complete, with the exception of the road/hard surface restoration.
Fairfax Trafficway Construction:
- Per the UG, the contractor has materials on order, and has since we awarded the project (the main hold up is steel). They expect to get the materials this month and are planning on starting construction the first week or so of May. Once they start, they are anticipating construction lasting 2-3 months. During construction, traffic will be shifted to the East and one lane in each direction will remain open,
