From KDot to the Fairfax District:
Yesterday the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) closed the eastbound I-70 Lewis & Clark Viaduct over the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kansas for repairs. The needed repairs were identified during a recent inspection of the bridge and the closure was done out of an abundance of caution.
A signed detour is in place and a detour map is attached to this email.
We recognizes that a sudden bridge closure of this magnitude will be a challenge for those of you who live, work and travel in this area, especially with the closure of other Kansas River crossings in the region. The safety of the traveling public is the reason the decision was made to close this bridge.
At this time, we estimate the bridge will be closed through the end of this year. KDOT has started developing engineering plans needed for the repair work and expects crews to begin that work on the bridge in about a month.
Please know that KDOT will work diligently to make the repairs as quickly as possible so that we can get the bridge back open to traffic.
We will make information available on our Kansas City Metro web page as updates are available: https://www.ksdot.gov/bureaus/kcMetro/default.asp.
